It didn’t take long for St. Cloud Cathedral and East Grand Forks to sense which team brought more juice to the party.

“We were chasing the game from the drop of the puck,” East Grand Forks coach Scott Koberinski said. “Our guys couldn’t match the intensity they had tonight.”

Reagan Garden and Jake Van Halbeck each scored two goals for St. Cloud Cathedral in a 6-3 victory against East Grand Forks in Wednesday’s fourth Class 1A quarterfinal.

“We definitely came out strong,” Garden said. “It did feel like they were chasing us.”

St. Cloud Cathedral remained in front after the teams traded second-period goals.

Van Halbeck’s goal gave the Crusaders a 3-1 lead. East Grand Forks countered with Casey Kallock’s goal. A two-goal Crusaders lead was restored as Michael Spethmann scored to make it 4-2. The Green Wave hung tough as Hunter Olson’s goal with one minute left cut St. Cloud Cathedral’s lead to 4-3 at second intermission.

Then Garden struck just 1:35 into the third period to assert control by making it a 5-3 lead. His first-period goal made it 2-1 at first intermission and kept the Crusaders at least one step ahead the rest of the night.
